Introduction

In my daily life, I have noticed that many elders and seniors face various difficulties caused by mild cognitive impairment. Therefore, I want to design a product to help them address the challenges they encounter. I have taught myself the interaction design process and methodologies in order to achieve this goal in a more systematic way.

I want to design an AR glasses, that combined with a mobile app, to provide an intelligent assistance tool for elder people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who wish to maintain some independence but need support with navigation and memory in daily life.

BACKGROUND

What is MCI?

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a condition in which people have more memory or thinking problems than other people their age. The symptoms of MCI are not as severe as those of Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. People with MCI can usually take care of themselves and carry out their normal daily activities.

What causes MCI?

Symptoms associated with MCI lie in the space between what are considered normal age-related changes and dementia. Many factors can cause problems with memory and thinking. There is no single cause of MCI, and it's more likely to occur as someone ages. Other factors like genetics and certain conditions — including diabetes, depression, and stroke — may affect a person’s risk for MCI.

How many people have MCI?

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has influenced about 10% to 20% of people that over 65 year-old in the global, reports from authoritative organization Alzheimers.gov, 2024.

According to United Nations population data in 2021, 75 to 150 million people aged 65 and above were affected by MCI, equivalent to twice the population of Morocco (2023) or the total population of Kazakhstan.

Symptoms and characteristics of MCI

I conducted relevant desk research to quickly identify user daily issues to gain a deeper learning of the general symptoms and characteristics of MCI patients.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

I conducted primary research by analyzing individuals with MCI through 3 interview and documentary videos. All three patients expressed a common theme: a strong desire for independence despite their cognitive challenges.

Since the idea was come through my finding and observation in my daily life and seniors around me, I also did a short 1-on-1 interview with my grandparents to understand their thoughts and feels.

PERSONAS

  • People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early Alzheimer's disease.

  • Those who want to maintain independent travel but need some reminders and safety.

  • Those who pay attention to the fact that the elderly have low technology awareness and are easily lost.
